Les Fleurs du Mal is a magazine focusing on emerging art and artists primarily in the Montreal, as well as on news, topics and issues in the fine arts. We publish researched journalistic feature articles, profiles of practicing artists, reviews of art shows, letters and op-ed articles and reproductions of selected works by artists we choose to feature. Les Fleurs du Mal is published on an occasional basis by students in the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDYS) program in Fine Arts at Concordia University, and is produced entirely by volunteer labour. The magazine is distributed free of charge at selected locations (galleries, artist-run centres, universities, libraries, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, etc.) throughout central Montreal.

Submission Guidelines:

Written Submissions

We are looking for the following kinds of articles:

¥ researched, journalistic feature articles offering in-depth approaches to topics and issues in the world of the fine arts

¥ shorter, ÒnewsyÓ pieces about new developments or trends in art

¥ engaging, well constructed profiles of emerging artists primarily (but not absolutely necessarily) in the Montreal area — their work, their ideas and their methods

¥ articulate, critical reviews of remarkable shows in visual arts and design, cinema, dance, or other fields

¥ opinion pieces on art topics and issues

Shorter pieces (100 to 800 words) can be sent to us as is. For longer articles (800 words or more), itÕs better to send us an e-mail with a brief description of the proposed article, including the general topic, why the article will be important or relevant, and how you will go about writing it (ideas for interviews, avenues of research, what makes it relevant or ÒnewsyÓ right now, etc.).

Keep in mind that you are writing for a magazine, not an academic journal, so an articulate but accessible style is important. A taut wit is even better! No footnotes or Òworks citedÓ lists, please.

If interested in becoming a regular writer, or if you have a great idea you think we should know about, then drop us a line. Potential show reviewers: WeÕd love to hear from you, and will assist you with access as best we can (we can try to get you access to shows, review copies, etc. — of course we canÕt offer guarantees in this regard).

Art Submissions

Are you an illustrator, graphic artist, or photographer? If youÕre willing and able to work to an art directorÕs specifications and produce material to accompany articles and features in the magazine, then we want you. Contact us!

Les Fleurs du Mal also from time to time profiles emerging artists and their work. Emphasis of any profile may refer to the artistÕs biographical details or life history; the artistÕs body of work or a particular show; or a particular skill or technique practiced by the artist, which would be of particular interest to readers; or some combination of the above.

If you know of an artist whose work would warrant profile in a Montreal magazine, please do not hesitate to contact us. Of course, as we cannot accommodate everyone who deserves such coverage, we will be exacting in our choices.
